Identify a quote

Postby jbmorgan4 on Wed Jul 21, 2010 1:08 pm

A quote that is frequently attributed to Nietzsche is a line that I have seen as either "The man of the future will be the one with the longest memory," or else as "Man is the being with the longest memory." It even appears in Ortega y Gasset. However, I've never seen either in any edition of Nietzsche's writings. Can anyone identify the source of this quote? The significant difference in meaning of the two quotes suggests to me that it may be a mistranslation.

I don't remember reading the quote you've provided but the second version seems like something Nietzsche would have said (substituting the word "animal" for "being"). Zarathustra did say that the ultimate (ie last) man (who himself is a member of the set 'man') 'knows everything that has ever happened' (Prologue, 5). This is not the man of the future (who has much greater kinship with the ubermensch than with man).

Enter War God stage left...
