I am assuming the priest was not just Serbian, but Serbian orthodox? He deserved to die.... absolute idiot. Orthodox priests are forbidden from fighting in a war- only time I heard of one being applauded for violence was when St. Nicholas bitch slapped a heretic.
Most Catholics are too, with a sad lapse in the middle ages. I am no hypocritical in this- I served in the military, and so will never become a priest.... I know of only one Greek priest who was ever in the military- and he was drafted and kept a desk job during the vietnam war- he explained to me about the circumstances of his service when I flashed him a dirty and quite judgmental look when I was sitting on a porch of a monastery and it was mentioned to me that he indeed did serve... as if it was a okay thing that somehow linked the two of us together in a bond.
There are few things I hold in lower regard... I can make allowances for non-combatant military chaplains... but this priest (in the poem, not the monastery) clearly was a renegade to his flock and deserved to die. I mean, fuck.... even the way he approached it was idiotic.... even though well within custom (the first American colonial hero and dictator John Smith killed two turks by just such a idiotic challenge. If you want to kill the enemy to prove your cunning, then take out some sentries or hit the enemies supply train or destroy something in their camp- don't stand like a dumbass infront of and within range of their strongest fortified position and hoot and holler. Dumb fucking idiot.... I wouldn't of bother to call that one up to higher, would of just shot his ass where he stood.
There is a very good and ancient (prechristian) reason why we don't mix the two- priesthood and martial combat.... it throws a sedentary state into absolute havoc due to the rapid breakdown of a unified group feeling into increasingly smaller and contradicting- and yet overlapping and mutually interdependent groups... they will quickly become absurdly opinionated... will kill one another- may get lucky to gain territorial holdings- but are still stuck with the issue of a state being formed in a time of war to the beliefs of a group that will often no longer apply later on. What moved men into protestantism or counter-catholism during the reformation dissipated during time of peace- the old trade patterns resumed in regards to the newly captured territories- and the refugees coming to america and other new world territories adopted habits and beliefs more similar to the terrain of the land than the fight they won or lost back in the motherland. I have always been stunned by the completely incomprehensible logic of it all.... very similar ethnicity- sometimes that exact same one... squabbling due to the cognitive strategies of the few on top.... they die, and the cognitive strategies they revere in their beloved spiritual leader arises in the enemy's camp! I am thinking mostly of the Catholics and the Huguenots in this, but can apply it equally well to the English Revolution- as well as alot of other theological wars that ended up in a muddled contradiction of personalities and a exhausted thermodorian reaction once the generation grows weary of debating with the machete and adopts the other's line.
A society lead by martial priests living in a sedentary society quickly leads to silly schisms, civil war, collapse and invites invasion by outsiders. I only make exception in cases of mobile, nomadic populations that are already tightly bounded and interdependent upon good order and loyalty to the group effort - given the size of the populations- in order to be manageable while mobile, and with a state of high efficency- tends to be clannish low in regards to the aristocratic and adminsitratively/intellectually inclined that are both educated and competent. You don't have that many people traditionally meeting those qualifications in such a society.
The priorities of the group to it's effect in the psychology of everyman, woman, and child within is already bounded to the direction a single group feeling set upon well known group relations that predetermine the priorties of the group- what rights can and cannot be assimulated from without and what has to be kept within for the sake of all. This allows little freedom of any member- be it leader or a person on the bottom (and in truth for nomads- not much difference in lifestyle for the two compared to that of a sedentary culture), to deviate from the needs, norms, and clear priorities- in essence the orthodoxy of spirit- of the group as it is formed for the needs of a continuously endangered nomadic lifestyle. Really doesn't matter in this case if the priest is also a warrior- as everyone is pretty much stuck being a warrior as well- little kids and women are going to die just as quickly as the males in combat as they are parked- if lucky not to be ambushed or sucked into the fight from the start- within hearing distance.
Hence why I can tolerate Moses and Joshua- but not idiot priests like this. This idiot has all the makings of a darwin award winner- just just for his approach to combat, but also for mixed loyalties to his people and his responsibilities to them.... he could of needlessly jeopardize the standings of countless priests serving their communities well within the far reaches of the ottoman empire. I am not sure if the millet system as I know it from later ottoman times was in place then- but this was a clear and needless threat to it.
I will say though... as idiotic as I see his actions, Montenegro and Albanian chivalry is similar to west virginian and the greater Appalachian ethics (both mountainous territories that skirted major routes of commerence and travel and has a long history of low intensity warfare as well as three large was fought in it's territory.
The only thing that bothers me about the code is that is shows a preference to perceiver and server functions at the same time- but not teacher..... which I think is highly odd- because there is only two personality types that have access to both of those at the same time- Contributors and Facilitators- and facilitators can barely use them- while contributors are going to exploit the teacher aspect of their psychology to strategize and quickly disregard a code of conduct that doesn't allow for creativity and elegance in operations. Two examples of what I mean from this age from this part of the world, Skanderbeg and John Hunyadi.... they both were contributors and knew when to disregard the code- and when to exploit it.
The breakdown of the code as I read it last year quite literally doesn't apply to anyone when you map out it's expectations psychologically.... as I said- no cognitive style can really restrict itself in sincerity to it expectations as it- facilitators are going to fail at it because it's all subconscious to them and forever a bit beyond them in comprehension, and contributors are going to see irritating, artificially imposed and holes and needless restrictions in it.... but at least it's high minded and wasn't as backwards as what the western states produced
Yes, the western states of europe had a psychologically more balanced and consistent system that was formatted rather nicely for a few cognitive styles- but however useful favored the meatheads over thinkers in the longrun, and I think the trickle down genetic effect of this is rather apparent if one reads any history of the late middle ages..... it took the better part of the industrial revolution to reverse that trend to change the population from the dimwitted and fast to temper type to a move towards the more industrial, attentive, and inventive.... both make fine warriors, but in today's fast pace tactical synthesis- only one knows how to capitalize on this with competency, stability, and high returns.... and it ain't the meathead anymore. Maybe someday one again, but not right now thankfully.
I hope this idiot didn't breed.... please tell me he wasn't married or had a mistress.
